Faraday Cage: Garbage Can, Really?

You do NOT need a ground!!! Watch this video: www.youtube.com – Is a steel garbage can a good Faraday cage to protect against EMP and Solar flares? IMHO absolutely! I show you how to test a Faraday cage to see if it is really working, how to make a nested Faraday cage and how to prepare the items you put in the Faraday cage. Make Sure You Read All the Info at www.FutureScience.com For info and to purchase EMP bags go to EMPBags.com

X-FLARE: Big sunspot AR1339 unleashed an X1.9-class solar flare on Nov. 3rd at 20:27 UT. A movie from the Solar Dynamics Observatory shows the extreme ultaviolet flash. The flare created waves of ionization in Earth’s upper atmosphere, altering the normal progagation of radio waves over Europe and the Americas. Stay tuned for updates.

@Ricardo2341 Sweet! Nice thinking out of the box.

  • Ricardo2341:

LOL made a small cage using a sock and alluminum foil and tested my phone and it worked :D

  • LDSPrepper:

@gizmostella Perfect. It passed the test. White noise means you are not getting a radio signal. The can is blocking the signal. That is exactly what you want. Good work.

  • gizmostella:

i just heard white noise with the lid on

  • LDSPrepper:

@gizmostella What didn’t work? Tune your FM radio (not AM) to any station. Put the lid all the way on the can. You will not hear any music. You can also try this with a cell phone. Put the cell phone in the can and close the lid tight. Wait 5 minutes so it doesn’t have any connection to a cell tower and dial the number. The phone will not work.

  • gizmostella:

i followed your instructions to the tee and it didnt work…why?

  • carneyusaf:

Great Concept!!! The cardboard is not there to keep stuff from banging around as mentioned earlier. It acts as an insulator between the trash can. Without some sore of insulation your electronics would fry by touching the sides as the electricity ran through the can. Which brings up another point, you must still ground the can using a grounding some sort of ground. YES the cage will work without a ground but don’t be fooled. EMP and/or Solar Flares are much more powerful. BE SAFE and ground it.

Not my video mate and I dont see hopw you could have been putting anything down, I was merely wondering if the copper foil you were talking about would be worth considering for the average Joe when thinking about price and availability.
aluminum foilf does work though so it’s not a case of either or.

  • mostlymichaelcanada:

FM vs. total spectrum of a nuke. This video is retarded.

  • mostlymichaelcanada:

@88Kamikaze69 I’m not putting your video down, however EMP resistance either works or it doesn’t. Appreciate your sharing your ideas.

  • LDSPrepper:

@BabyBribbles The cardboard is only there as a cushion so things don’t get banged around so much. You don’t need it for protection.

  • BabyBribbles:

I love your video and the tracing and cutting of the lid and bottom are very good. I am struggling with doing the inside of the can and wish you would have shown step by step how you did it ….other than the slicing up the bottom of the cupboard. I will keep trying. Thank you for all your videos ;-) …..very informational.

  • 88Kamikaze69:

    @LDSPrepper
Considering it’s something you put faith in will survive a full out emp burst (most likely scenario being a nuke or huge solar flare) kind of makes it something you shouldn’t even consider taking out of the container before you need it so I’d say being assured it’s not going to get fried far trumps accessibility.

  • 88Kamikaze69:

    @mostlymichaelcanada
So… effectiveness vs. availability, really worth considering for the average joe?

  • mostlymichaelcanada:

@88Kamikaze69 Actually, copper foil is available for purchase. The military builds copper shielded rooms. They even a sort of copper wallpaper that can be applied, however the room must be grounded. Grounding is critical.

  • mostlymichaelcanada:

@LDSPrepper If you’ve used a microwave for cooking, that IS the test. If you look at the window in the door, that screen mesh is part of the faraday cage, built into the oven. If you cook and put your face next to the door, your face doesn’t cook. Faraday cage worked. I keep a spare radio inside an old microwave that has a burnt out magnetron. Yes, I trust it.

  • franchica:

Umm. what is this all about? why are you preparing to protect your electronics from emps etc?

  • Textynn:

Tell your weed wacking neighbor he’s an ass.

  • netwerkthis:

Whats everyones thoughts on putting low voltage cat5 cable and other spare light gauge or heavy wire in its own can? Im wondering if the surge is high enough if wire itself can ground out and burn becoming useless.

  • LDSPrepper:

@mostlymichaelcanada Excellent comment. Have you tested using your microwave as a faraday cage? I did and it didn’t work. If you use it as a faraday cage how do you use it as a microwave. I don’t expect any warning so the critical items I want to work are stored in my tested faraday cage 24/7.

  • LDSPrepper:

@MishinFishin Thatnks for asking. Not at all because there is no circuitry in them, i.e. diodes, resisters, capacitors, etc, just solar cells.

  • MishinFishin:

Will an EMP affect the solar panels them self ???

  • mostlymichaelcanada:

If you understood basic electrical theory, you’d realize that this simply isn’t true. Your best best for storing critical electronic gear is inside a microwave oven, and keep it plugged in. That way its grounded and shielded. A microwave oven has a faraday cage inside to contain the microwaves.

Using foil won’t hurt but it won’t help when the massive EMP surge strikes your electronics.

  • ForrestHorn:

Please tell whomever was running the weed eater while you were recording that they are rude, crude and socially unacceptable!

  • LDSPrepper:

@88Kamikaze69 The purpose of the can is accessibility. I am sure wrapping with aluminum foil is great but terrible for accessibility.

  • Skyywatcher88:

@Turkiloo OK, lets have some fun with this…I’ll predict that this sunspot (11339) will produce an X6.7 on Monday the 7th, of Nov….I’m not a prophet…just making a guess..playing around…lol, but let us see…Peace!

  • MissInformed1967:

Look at the fireworks display that baby is giving off, just in time for Bonfire Night! Nice show SolarWatcher aka Joe keep up the good work!

  • putzilutzi:

    @krjourneyfan78
    its the x-flar sound!
    peace – love & flares ;) )

  • Skyywatcher88:

UPDATE: Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be mostly moderate but there is a chance for additional major flare activity. The primary source of the elevated activity is expected to be Region 1339. There may also be a contribution to the M-flare activity from Region 1338.

Thanks for your update ! Really well done !

  • unnim:

Ok lady, we going for a ride. Hold on to your potato.

@Skyywatcher88 thank you. am checking out the site.

  • krjourneyfan78:

Hi Richard. How do you know about the disruption of the radio waves? Can you please share this source. thank you! – kr

  • krjourneyfan78:

Wow, your music is even amped-up in intensity. you much be really feeling that something is coming! Please don’t hesitate to keep those updates coming. thank you! – kr

  • Skyywatcher88:

@Turkiloo Its starting to look that way…Thanks for the comment…Peace!

  • GTIboost5a:

@redfoxtrapper Well the satellites orbit our planet not the sun. Since this not earth directed, I would imagine our satellites and comm fine. Earth directed different story.

  • Turkiloo:

I got a feeling this sunspot is going to be bombarding us for the next few days and creating a spectacular show in the sky :)

  • Skyywatcher88:

    @SolarWatcher Let the show begin!

  • SolarWatcher:

get ready for the fireworks, things are about to step up a few notches

  • redfoxtrapper:

Thanks for the added information of radio waves being affected. Just how bad did this or will this affect our satellite and radio wave communications?
