101 Ways to MAKE FIRE – Sept 2010 Sneak Peek – 10 Fires
Ten Down- 91 to go. This video is a sneak preview of some of the fire-making methods I have been working on for the past few months. There are three new videos in various stages of production, all of which will hopefully be posted within the next month. Also the “lost tapes” of the hand-crank drill, which cover the basic principles of all friction-based fires. Welcome and thanks to all the new subscribers. Apologies and thanks to all the existing subscribers who did not unsubscribe despite the dearth of new videos. The World Cup here in South Africa was a bit of a distraction, I must admit. Rest assured that I have been busily burning things throughout. Lots of experimentation with different alternatives to char cloth, ie things that will take a spark or other point source of energy and then hold it and smoulder predictably (what I call a “smould” – something which is supposed to smoulder). Also lots of trial and error on designing the perfect tinder bundle or bird’s nest. Don’t want to give too much away, because I’d really like people to try to guess what the different methods might be, based on the short snippets in this video. Let’s just say that I’ve been doing some Tom Hanks style dancing and celebrating after a number of significant successes. Some of the primitive methods are hard work, but when they finally come together, it’s a real oonga boonga moment.
